The First Sacrifice

God made the first sacrifice in the Bible for Adam and Eve that extends to the entire humanity in Genesis 3:21.

No Remission of Sins without the shedding of the blood

By this act of sacrifice, God has showed a replica of what was to come. The sacrifice of His Only Begotten Son for the sins of the world.

In Genesis 3:15, God made a promise to mankind that He would send His Son (the seed or offspring of Woman) to save them from eternal damnation that is destined for the Devil and his followers.

And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
    and you will strike his heel. (Gen 3:15)

A sinless world would not require any sacrifice, as it was before the fall of Adam and Eve. As soon as Adam and Eve committed sin, God had to intervene with a sacrifice to redeem His loved creation (made in His own image).

God showed kindness and mercy to the fallen man by making a provision for him to repent and come back to God.

Adam and Eve have to just trust in God and His planned provision through faith that he would atone for their sins.

Permanent Garments

After committing the sin of disobedience, Adam made a covering of fig leaves for himself and Eve. Man tries to find temporary solutions that will meet the needs for a very short time but soon he will be in want again. Due to this temporary nature of his actions, man keeps running from one thing to another. In running from one thing to another, man is always restless, uncertain and fills his life with anxiety and tension.

Genesis 3:21 says,

The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

God provides eternal solutions. Man can just trust God knowing that God will bring forth the best to shape his life. Through the sacrifice, God provided Leather (animal skin) garments to Man and Woman, a permanent clothing to replace the temporary clothing of fig leaves.

Jesus says to all who are weary, burdened and heavy laden in Matt 11:28-30:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

God has removed the shame of physical and moral nakedness that man was feeling by clothing him. The shame made man to hide from God. Man communed with God as a friend would commune with another friend. Sin has distanced man from God and now man needs to hide. By clothing man appropriately, God brought Adam back from hiding into His presence. God removed Adam from the Garden of Eden for his disobedience. However, the presence of God has never left him. God pursues us with all His love, kindness, mercy, grace and compassion.

Clothing is a constant reminder of our Sin and the need for Redemption and Righteousness that only comes from God

Clothing came as a cover up for our shame after Adam and Eve committed the sin of disobedience. God removed that sense of shame by clothing them with animal skins. However, the garments are a constant reminder to us that we are sinful beings in need of a loving God who will take us back to His glory and His wonderful plans for us.

God will convert our shame into Joy and Blessing:

Instead of your shame
    you will receive a double portion,
and instead of disgrace
    you will rejoice in your inheritance.
And so you will inherit a double portion in your land,
    and everlasting joy will be yours.

 “For I, the Lord, love justice;
    I hate robbery and wrongdoing.
In my faithfulness I will reward my people
    and make an everlasting covenant with them.
 Their descendants will be known among the nations
    and their offspring among the peoples.
All who see them will acknowledge
    that they are a people the Lord has blessed.” (Isaiah 61:7-9)

The clothing provided by God is also a symbol of the enteral clothing of righteousness that God guarantees to all who believe in Jesus Christ through faith.
